The overarching goals of his current work are: (i) Service in public health sector for the underserved; (ii) System design for establishing institutes & centers of excellence with emphasis on Quality & Patient Safety;(iii) Collaborative initiatives across health systems in India & with US; and (iv) Testing Models for Value-Based Health Care.

Dr. Ravikumar is recognized internationally for his work in colorectal cancer, liver surgery, novel regional therapies for liver tumors and patient safety. Based on his expertise in patient safety at hospitals in USA and later in India, he was made a member of WHO Patient Safety Curriculum working group. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the top doctors/best doctors listings. He is a member of several surgical and oncologic societies, including American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of University Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. He is a Past-President of New York Surgical Society. The New York Daily News named him "21 New Yorkers to Watch in the 21st Century" in its 2000 millennium edition.
He has over 230 peer reviewed publications, abstracts, book chapters & education videos (Available in full format curriculum vitae). He has a rare distinction of having occupied Endowed Chairs in USA as well as in India.
After completing his surgical residency and clinical fellowship in surgical oncology, his NIH-NRSA fellowship focus was basic research in tumor immunology at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School. Thereafter he continued basic/translational/clinical research throughout his academic career as a surgical oncology faculty at several premier medical schools in the USA, while maintaining a busy clinical practice in GI/Hepato-pancreato-biliary cancers. Within the realm of surgical oncology, his body of work as Clinical Investigator include: developing novel regional treatment strategies for liver tumors & colorectal cancer/liver metastasis. Since 2000, his interest spans patient safety & quality of care.
During his tenure at JIPMER he brought transformational changes at the institute: It won the acclaim as the third ranked medical school, sixth highly rated multi-specialty hospital as well as ranked fourth for research infrastructure in all of India. Under his leadership, JIPMER for the first time in its history, received award of excellence in 2015 "CNBC TV 18 - ICICI Lombard - India Healthcare Awards". He commissioned several projects at JIPMER: a 400 bed Women & Children Hospital, JIPMER Academic Centre, JIPMER International School of Public Health (JISPH); a large student Hostel Complex, super specialty block expansion, JIPMER Quality Council and Apex trauma/emergency/ disaster management centre.
Subsequently at SVIMS he established a medical college exclusively for women; a general teaching hospital; a “Centre for Advanced Research” (CfAR), to name a few. He initiated several population health strategies such as: Community CPR, ‘PINK BUS’ for women’s bundled cancer screening, novel patient safety initiatives to improve hospital wide mortality, public reporting of quality metrics, and Real Time Actionable Patient Experience of Care (R-TAPE) portal.
Since 2017, he served as advisor for the development of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri, for campus design and commencement of medical school /hospital complex; he subsequently served as its President & Chairman. He is the convenor of IRAPS (Implementation Research Associates for Patient Safety) which comprises of four new AIIMS and National Institute of Design (NID), India. The Government of Tamil Nadu has nominated him as its representative to the coordination/liaison committee for another new AIIMS at Madurai, where he was instrumental in accelerating the commencement of the initial batch of medical students. In AIIMS Madurai he is a Visiting Professor and Chairs its Research Advisory Council. Dr Ravikumar has been active in establishing collaborations between health systems in USA & India during the last decade in several dimensions, including: quality/patient safety, population health and promoting Accountable Health Systems. He is also the convenor of a collaborative between American Heart Association and several new AIIMS for Community CPR. At JISPH he Co-Chairs the International Advisory Board with a mentorship role.
